The Bookhouse

In 2008, I designed and co-built this children's playhouse with Steve Matheny for the Morrison Regional Library in Charlotte, North Carolina. The idea was born because we wanted for a permanent  playhouse for the children and we were looking at purchasing one. But, at the same time we had hundreds of discarded books. So, I had the idea let's make a book house out of children's books. It is made out of 434 discarded juvenile fiction, 20 weeded picture books and 6 board books. Children and adults enjoy the house and it has become a noted attraction in the library. The cost for materials : wood for framing, linoleum, steel rods and hardware and paint came to under $60.00. It has been standing for 4 years and it doesn't appear to be loosing it's appeal or strength - so far the idea has been a good light bulb.Click!
